ULTIMATE TIP #1 - Unsure about a buyer?
To put off any scammer, insist on payment by cash in person only.
ULTIMATE TIP #2 - Scammers ALWAYS ALWAYS want to send you way MORE then the item is worth and get you to send on the difference to a shipping agen.t
NEVER - *EVER* accept overpayment of ANY kind.

BEFORE WE BEGIN!
A NOTE ON ANY CHEQUE-BASED SCAMS

Where scammers get you is that bankers drafts or Western Union Cheques can take up to 2 weeks to be of any value, and if you ask the bank 2-4 days after banking it "Has it cleared?" - You will get a YES! - It may also appear in your account!!

HOWEVER!!!! -
'Has it cleared' does NOT mean it 'has value' (i.e. its worth anything) - you must ask if the Cheque 'has value' to be sure.
Its an annoying quirk in bank-speak that many fall for, and banks never make clear to its customers.
(If you want, ask your bank for express clearance - for just a few pounds more to confirm the cheque 'has value')

IMPORTANT: Cheques deposited MAY show in your balance even though it is uncleared - and when the fake cheque bounces (and it will, trust me) YOU will be liable for overdraft fees and a possible bounced cheque fee.

IMPORTANT: Scammers using 'certified' chques - there's no such thing! They also often use fake foreign cheques, watch for these.

NEW SCAM STYLES:

Scammers top aliases!

Scammers don't seem to be too inventive when it comes to names - our most popular scammers name is 'James McDonald' or 'James Worland' and has now been joined by 'Robert Steel' and 'John Bradson'. Just watch out for these alongside the usual Shipping agents etc etc...

Scammers get technical!

Spark plugs please!!
".....you will be recieving a cheque of £4,000 from my husband who is in the state for a construction work he is very busy as the chief engineer of fresse construction company. So as soon as you cash it,you can go ahead to deduct the cost of this bike and an extra £10 for the neccesary things for the bike like spark plugs for the bike.."

Thanks to Adrian for this one.

Scammers offering to pay you to remove advert

It seems our scammers are rolling in fake money - their now offering extra money if you take the advert down, in addition to an extra 100 quid or so to 'get the bike ready' for them. They're just so generous!

"Note:- I will wait for the cheque to clear before the shipper comes for the pick-up. And I wouldn't mind compensating you with £20 if you can remove the advert off the Website, cos I am very much interested in the Vehicle more than any potential buyer."

The scammer says they'll wait for the cheque to clear - but they won't - they'll pressure you to pass on the cheque BEFORE the 2 week clearing time - KNOWING FULL WELL the cheque will bounce. The key to the scam is to pursade you to pass on the money before it bounces.

Thanks to Morgan, Mark & Steven for sending us their scam emails

Scammers using 070 telephone numbers - ALERT!!

Stuart and Terry have both noted scam messages where the scammer has listed a phone number for you to call when giving out his FALSE UK postal address. Both chaps asked the scammer for an address for the V5 - and this threw the scammer.
But they gave addresses in the UK and a telephone number- which looks genuine.
HOWEVER - 070 240 numbers are PREMIUM RATE numbers and charge 50 pence per min. The scammer used the following number

070 240 76474

There are many many other premium rate numbers beginning with 070 - so watch out for them - its a sure sign of a scammer.
Read our tips

Too much ONO!
Offering near correct amount / transfer by bank Aberdeen scams

Two recent scams that Paddy and Justin got should also be noted:
The scammer will start with a brief note, but seems to mis-understand the meaning of 'ONO' (Or Nearest Offer) as they'll start by offering you MORE then your ONO asking price. Oops!
Don't be suckered by the idea of a few hundred quid more - the scammer is counting on your greed.

Thank you to David J and David M for notice of this new scam style.

TIPS ON AVOIDING SCAMS

This site is being subjected to email scams by complete fudge-nudging idiots.

• DON'T be fooled by a UK email address - anyone can apply for them / they can be easily faked!!

• Treat ANY buyer who asks you to send A SHIIPING AGENT money as a scam!!

• Scammers will NEVER want to come in person (after all , they're in Nigeria, or some place) - so ALWAYS insist on cash in hand.

Don't fall victim to greed, as scammers never haggle, always ask top price and offer several hundred pounds more for the hassle of sending their accomplice the difference to the huge fake cheque they've just sent you.

• Scammers use bad english, and are inconsistent. Ask them where they live, then in another email ask them for an address for the V5 and see what happens.

• Scammers seem to love buying on behalf of people, so they'll mention their client at some point - even though they've started off by saying its them that's interested.

• USING 070 telephone numbers. Watch carefully for premium rate 070 numbers being used by scammers. They look too much like mobile numbers, but are not.

HOW IT GENERALLY WORKS:
These scams normally involve poor written English by foreign 'buyers'. They offer MORE then you are asking - and ALWAYS try to send you a cheque for thousands more then the cost - and then ask you to deduct your payment and post the remainder on. They also try to get you to SHIP the goods out to them.
*** You'd have to ask yourself - "Why is this buyer buying a £700 scooter - and then paying £3,500-odd quid just to get it shipped to them?"

Needless to say, the original cheque will bounce (and this can take up to 2 weeks or more to bounce) and you will lose your money AND possibly your scooter.

PLEASE use caution when replying to any email from overseas (or in UK!) - any offer that is too good to be true IS. Any offer that doesn't make sense, or seems 'strange' - ignore it. Any buyer who doesn't know what he's buying or what the price is.

UPDATE: Scammers are now often saying they are from Holland or even the UK, however the scam is the same. Try asking them a technical question, or something you'd expect a Scooter rider to know! They ignore the questions and continue to babble about sending you thouands by cheque and you posting on the remainder to them, whilst their non-existant agent will come pick up your .......

The email scams will vary in name, country of origin and format, but all will be badly worded and include the shipping / western union payment methods. Check with your bank, check with Wetern union, and use extreme caution.

We are working on a way to stop these pillocks from spamming you, until then - be careful!

TIP:
If in doubt, request cash - any decent scooterist is going to want to SEE and RIDE your scooter after all!!! Remember to hold onto the FULL cash amount and paperwork if you let someone come and test ride your scooter (Don't settle for holding onto a 'deposit' whilst the person test-rides your scooter (into the sunset))

You have been warned. Do not LOSE your scooter to greed or ignorance.
PLEASE, PLEASE! Send us a copy of the email if you are in doubt. Be safe - be sure!!
